Mr. Rosen is a Chartered Chemist and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (London); a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists and both a Nationally Certified Professional Chemist and Certified Professional Chemical Engineer. He is a member of the U.S. Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) & the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Meyer serves as an Advisor for David Smith, Executive Director of the SCC Advisory Committee. He is also Editor for U.S. & Canada and Editor-in-Chief for North and Latin America for EuroCosmetics Magazine in Germany. Mr. Rosen is Editor of the Delivery System Handbook for Personal Care and Cosmetic Products and Editor-in-Chief of Harry’s Cosmeticology, 9th Edition.

Dr. Michniak-Kohn’s main research focus lies in the area of topical and transdermal drug delivery. Her group is involved in the design and testing of novel dermal penetration enhancer and retardant compounds, investigation of their mechanisms of action and transport through the skin layers, molecular and computational modeling of percutaneous absorption as well as optimization and testing of topical and transdermal formulations. Studies involve novel carrier systems such as nanospheres and investigation of skin transport pathways using confocal microscopy, SEM, TEM, Raman & FTIR. Physical drug delivery enhancement techniques are also being studied such as iontophoresis and the use of microneedles.

Several projects involve a tissue engineered full-thickness human skin model which has been shown to possess similar drug permeability to human skin. Projects include evaluation of correlations between the drug permeability, stratum corneum lipid composition/organization, growth media composition, immunohistochemistry, and morphology and gross structure of the bioengineered skin. In addition, a novel polymer dermal scaffold is being tested in the model to improve its mechanical strength. Additional studies involve the effects of protective barrier creams on the penetration of chemical warfare agent mimics using various skin models.  

Part of the work includes in vivo pharmacokinetic & metabolic studies with drugs administered by several routes (topical, intravenous-infusion, bolus, and oral). In addition, the group is part of the $15M Rutgers NSF Engineering Research Center examining the scientific foundation, based on a predictive understanding of structure-function-performance relationships, for the optimal design of structured organic composites with advanced functionality.


Bozena B. Michniak-Kohn joined the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy as Associate Professor of Pharmaceutics (with tenure) in 2005 and is Director of the Laboratory for Drug Delivery of the NJ Center for Biomaterials (NJCBM), as well as Project Leader, FDA Liaison and Steering Committee Member of the $15M NSF Engineering Research Center (ERC). Previously (2000-2005) she was at the Dept. of Pharmacology & Physiology, University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ- NJ Medical School (Newark) & was Director of the Laboratory for Drug Delivery for NJCBM-Newark. She obtained her Ph.D. in Pharmacology in 1980 from Leicester Polytechnic, Leicester, U.K now renamed the DeMontfort University. Postdoctoral experience was gained with Profs. N. Bodor (University of Florida) and B. Barry (University of Bradford, U.K). She returned in 1986 to the U.S. as Assistant Professor, College of Pharmacy, University of South Carolina-USC, Columbia SC. In 1998 she became tenured full Professor and Director of the Transdermal and Topical Drug Delivery Laboratory at USC.

Dr. Michniak has directed over 20 Ph.D. students, 6 Masters students, and 250+ undergraduates and the work resulted in over 300 abstracts, 3 patent applications, 25 book chapters, and more than 85 papers. From 1995 to 2005 she served as reviewer on the NIH Study Section “Drug Development and Delivery” SBIR/STTR, IRG “Biophysics and Chemistry” and in 2002 she became Chair of this section. She is a reviewer on NIH Study Sections “Gene and Drug Delivery” as well as the Bioengineering Research Partnership Grants (PAR-99-009) and the U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation. She has organized and chaired many symposia and workshops for the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) and was the 2001 Chair of the Dermatopharmaceutics Focus Group. She was Abstract Screening Chair (2000) and Programming Chair (2004) for the Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery (PDD) section. She was the 2005 Chair of the AAPS PDD section.  She now serves as the 2007 Chair of the AAPS Student and Post Doc Outreach and Development Committee (SPOD). Dr. Michniak also serves as the U.S. Editor of the Controlled Release Society Newsletter. She is a reviewer for over a dozen pharmaceutical and drug delivery journals.
