He worked two years for Pirelli Corporation in the field of physical and chemical properties of polymers.  Since then he has held the positions of Manager of Claim Substantiation at Croda, Inc., Applications Manager Personal Care at Dow Chemical Co/Amerchol Corporation, Hair Care Manager for Firmenich, Inc., Senior Research Scientist at Ciba, Group Leader Hair Care R&D at BASF, and currently he is a Research Fellow at Ashland Specialty Ingredients.

Dr. Gamez-Garcia is the author of numerous publications on hair physical properties, hair damage, hair conditioning, and delivery of actives from shampoos.  In 2000, he received the Society of Cosmetic Chemists Award for the best published paper and in 2011 he received the prestigious Shaw Mudge award for his work on hair straightening and heat damage.

Susan Freers is Technical Manager in the Technical Service Department of Grain Processing Corporation, a manufacturer of grain-based specialty ingredients.  Susan is involved in developing new and novel ingredients and applications for the personal care, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical industries.

Born in India, Shyam received his Ph.D. in Organic Medicinal Chemistry. He continued his career in organic synthesis and pharmaceuticals fields, holding research positions at various universities (Indiana University, Purdue University, Arizona State University), and at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals.

He later moved to Arizona (India-like climate) and developed strong interest in cosmetics sciences while employed at The Dial Corporation. His attention was soon drawn to innovations in skin care via the application of medicinal delivery systems and multi-functional cosmeceuticals from Ayurvedic and Chinese botanicals.

Shyam is currently president of his consulting company, Bioderm Research, which develops innovative nature-based cosmeceuticals and delivery systems for high performance personal care and OTC-drug products for worldwide clients. Dr. Qi Jia received his B.S. in Medicinal Chemistry from School of Pharmaceutical Science, Beijing Medical University in 1985 and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Texas Christian University in 1995.  Dr. Jia studied Traditional Chinese Medicine & taught Natural Product Chemistry in the School of Pharmaceutical Science, Beijing Medical University from 1985-1991. His doctorate research at TCU focused on the discovery of drug leads for the treatment of HIV infection and solid tumors from Bolivian medicinal herbs. 

Since joining Unigen in 1995, Dr. Jia has established collaborations with six organizations around the world; collected thousands of indigenous medicinal plants and  guided efforts to build up a proprietary natural product library with over 300,000 samples.

Dr. Nadine Pernodet currently holds the position of Executive Director, Global Research & Development- Skin Biology, for EstĂ©e Lauder Companies, Inc.   

Dr. Pernodet is a key member of the team responsible for research, developing and testing future technology for all global skincare products.  She has been actively involved in the field of scientific research for more than ten years, recently holding the position of Assistant Professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Prior to that, she was a Research Scientist.  In addition to publishing numerous articles, she is the holder of key patents and the recipient of three grants relating to important works in her field with the NSF and the NIH.  

Her unique approach to the science of skincare is to combine her extensive knowledge and background in Biophysics and Biology to better understand skin aging. As well, she has been at the forefront of the research in Epigenetics with Clock genes and Sirtuins research. Dr. Pernodet also continues her strong relationship with academia.

Dr. Pernodet graduated with a Chemistry degree from Franche-Comte University in Besancon, France and obtained a BS and MS in Physical Chemistry from Louis Pasteur University in Strasbourg, France.  She received her Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the Institut Charles Sadron/Louis Pasteur University and has spent 6 years in research with the Biomedical and Chemical Engineering Programs in Stony Brook before joining as Assistant Professor in Materials Science and Engineering Department.

Edward Pelle is a Director in the Skin Biology Laboratory in the R&D Department of the Estee Lauder Companies.   In this lab the structure and function of skin is studied leading to more effective skin care products.  

Dr. Pelle has studied the effects of environmental stressors, such as UV, ozone, and cigarette smoke on epidermal and dermal cells.  Understanding how to protect skin against various types of environmental trauma by the use of antioxidants and inhibitors of reactive oxygen species has been a goal for over twenty years.  Delineating the differences between endogenous aging and photo aging and the role that epigenetics plays in this process and its relation to oxidative mechanisms is a more current objective in his work.  

Dr. Pelle is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Environmental Medicine, New York University School of Medicine where he has collaborated on several projects with other faculty and contributes a lecture in the Transcription and Signaling Class given by the department at the graduate level.  He has also worked on RNA processing at Rockefeller University and done research in hematology at New York University Medical Center.  He received a BS from Fordham University, and an MS and Ph.D. from New York University.  

He has authored or co-authored over thirty peer-reviewed publications, four review articles, and numerous abstracts.  He also holds over fifteen U.S. patents and is listed in the Marquis Who’s Who in Science and Engineering.  He is a member of the Society for Investigative Dermatology and the Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine.

As an Executive Director of BioActives, Chia is involved in all aspects of Active ingredient development that feeds into 30 divisions under the Estee Lauder umbrella. Chia develops bench top process for the isolation, purification and discovery of new actives (Single Plant vs. Recipes) and work closely with collaborators in Academia and manufacturers to bring a prototype extract to commercialization for cosmetic use. She works with the Product Development Groups and advices suitable raw materials used for claim and activity.  She is responsible for running internal education program through Top Actives Review and Scientific Symposium with vendors. Her group sets up Organic plantations, coordinates botanical collaborations, testing of biological actives world wide and maintains Actives Database which supports Clinical, Claim Support (Legal) Safty and Regulatory with efficacy data needed for substantiation.  In 2008, she took on additional responsibility of being the Manager for AGI Dermatics, and manages the Technical Support and Internal Sales of EL’s only custom chemical company.


Chia is born in Taiwan and raised in US. She holds a Masters degree in Pharmacology specialized in Plant research. She joined the Estee Lauder Companies in 1996. For her 16 years in the industry, Chia is quite involved in Society of Cosmetic Chemistry.  She served in the House Committee for the Long Island Chapter from 1998 to 2004, received Young Scientist Award in 2002, served as Treasurer Elect for 2003 and Treasurer for 2004.  Chia is an active member of American Society of Pharmacognosy,  American Botanical Council and Cosmetic Executive Women.  She has given many presentations and granted numerous patents.

Lisa earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Truman State University in 2001 and a PhD in Polymer Science & Engineering from The University of Southern Mississippi in 2008.  Her research was sponsored by the Society of Cosmetic Chemists Graduate Fellowship, with a focus on polymer-surfactant interactions and high-throughput screening.  

In 2006, Dr. Gandolfi joined Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products Company where her research focused on development of new technologies for innovation in cleansing products.  Lisa joined Clariant Corporation in 2011 as the Technical Manager for Consumer Care in North America.  Her team is responsible for technical service, sales support, and regional application development for Clariant’s Personal Care and Industrial & Home Care product portfolios.


Ramiro Galleguillos, PhD

Dr. Galleguillos obtained his BS degree in Chemical Engineering from Universidad Mayor de San Andres, La Paz Bolivia, with an Industrial Chemistry degree from Yamaguchi University, Ube, Japan. He graduated with an MS degree in Chemical Engineering from Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, USA. Later on, he obtained his Doctorate Degree from Case Western Reserve University, School of Macromolecular Science; Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

After graduation he joined Helene Curtis Inc., HCI, in Chicago Illinois which was later acquired by Unilever. He worked in the Advanced Formulations Group of HCI/UL for 12 years where he conducted product development research in areas of Antiperspirants and Deodorants, hair fixatives and related hair care products. In particular he was involved in the formulation of innovative AP sticks, soft solids and refractive-index matched clear gels, reduced VOC aerosol and non-aerosol hair sprays, hair mousses and gels. Additionally, he worked as adjunct professor at The Illinois Institute of Technology where he taught a Polymer Chemistry graduate course for three years.

He joined Lubrizol (ex BF Goodrich/Noveon) in 1997 and worked in the Synthesis Group preparing and testing rheology modifiers and fixatives for personal care. He was responsible for initiating the Fixate™ line of hair fixative polymers at Lubrizol. Currently he works in the applications team of the personal care group of Lubrizol conducting research in polymer-surfactant systems. In particular, he is involved in new product and formulation development, helping screen, develop and test rheology modifiers for use in surfactant compositions such a body washes, shampoo, liquid soaps and related cleansing products.


Dr. Galleguillos holds more than 40 granted patents and has made several publications.

Simon obtained his D.Phil. from Oxford University in 1982, and since then has worked continuously in the field of materials characterisation – first with ICI, and since 2007 with Intertek. Simon’s team in the UK has many years of experience in the characterisation of Nanomaterials, and Simon himself has been active in the management of a number of collaborative projects in the field, including the major UK DTI-funded Nanocentral programme. Simon has, over the years, published a number of papers and book chapters in the field optical characterisation of materials.

John M. Zielinski, PhD Chemical Engineering

John earned his PhD from The Pennsylvania State University in 1992 and was a visiting scholar, supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Society and the National Science Foundation, at the Universität Mainz/Max Planck Institut fĂĽr Polymerforschung, Germany, from 1993 to 1994.  He was a lead research engineer at Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. until transitioning to his role as supervisor of the Sorption Characterization Lab at Intertek ASA.

John’s career has focused on the characterization of a broad range of porous materials used for gas separation and purification applications. In addition, he has applied his chemical engineering background to elucidate multicomponent molecular transport within various media including polymer films and molecular sieving materials. These studies required the development of analytical methods to: 1) probe the equilibrium and diffusion characteristics of gases and vapors within a variety of materials and 2) illuminate the effect of pore structure on material performance.

Dr. Zielinski is the author of forty-two peer-reviewed journal articles and serves as an adjunct professor for the Department of Chemical Engineering at Penn State.  He is a member of the Alexander von Humboldt Society of America and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Pete obtained a BS in Chemistry at Millersville University in 1996 and a PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of Delaware in 2003. His PhD thesis was focused on the structure property relationships of mixed-metal oxide catalysts. He then spent 1 year at the Materials Science and Engineering Laboratory at NIST as an NRC Post-doctoral Research Fellow continuing research on metal oxide catalysts and model systems for studying phenomena in high-temperature super conductors. Peter taught for 2 years as a visiting professor in the Department of Chemistry at Bloomsburg University followed by 4 years as a research engineer and analytical chemist at Air Products and Chemicals. He is currently the X-ray diffraction expert for Intertek ASA in Allentown, PA. His areas of expertise include heterogeneous catalysis, x-ray diffraction, crystallography, and transmission electron microscopy.

Todd M. McEvoy, PhD Chemistry

Todd graduated with a BS in Chemistry and with Honors from Shippensburg University in 1998. In August 1998 he entered the University of Texas at Austin to pursue his Doctorate in Chemistry under the guidance of Professor Keith J. Stevenson. His work at UT focused on developing integrated spectral, microscopic and electrochemical methods to study charge storage processes in electrochromic ion-storage materials. Upon graduation in 2003 he became a NRC Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the Naval Research Laboratory for Jeffrey Long and Debra Rolison. There he was developing new hybrid polymer/carbon materials for ultracapacitor applications. Todd joined the Analytical group at Air Products and Chemicals in 2004 where he was part of the surface characterization lab supporting a wide variety of groups across Technology. He also worked on bench and pilot scale advanced oxidation water treatment processes within the Water group in Merchant R&D. He joined Intertek in 2010, and is currently involved in solving complex problems through the use of analytical science. His areas of expertise include electrochemistry, microscopy, and surface science.

Scott earned a BS in Chemistry from the Honors College at Michigan State University in 1985 and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1990.  Scott’s graduate work focused on measuring the reaction rates of specific excited states of metal cations with small hydrocarbons in the gas phase.  After graduation he joined the Analytical Science Department at Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. in Allentown, PA as the laser science expert.  Over time, his interest in laser science developed into expertise in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry.  He also developed expertise in time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) to enable the characterization of surfaces.  In addition to his research career, Scott has also been active in laboratory management.  Scott transitioned to Intertek ASA in 2010 in the dual role of Chief Scientist and Laboratory Operations Manager.  

Dr. Hanton is the author of thirty-six peer-reviewed journal articles, serves as a member of the editorial board for the Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (JASMS), and is on the board of directors for the Laboratory Managers Association (ALMA).

Prior to joining Intertek, Ruud worked for Avantium Technologies as Vice President of Intellectual Assets & Licensing, Business Development, Operations and Discovery.


He started his career in ABB Lummus Global as Technology Development Manager. Ruud is a member of a number of Associations including The Royal Dutch Chemical Society, the Dutch Catalysis Society and was appointed to the Health and Beauty America (HBA) Scientific Advisory Board. Ruud has achieved the DuPont Chemical Company Prize for Outstanding Independent Research and holds a Doctorate in Catalysis from Utrecht University.





Dr. Matteo Zanotti Russo

Dr. Matteo Zanotti Russo currently is a Teacher at the Faculty of Pharmacy (University of Pisa) in "cosmetic products".

 In the last few years, he has chaired and participated as a speaker in international seminars on Safety Assessment reports (compliancy with the EU legislation) in Israel, Turkey, USA, Brazil and many EU Countries.

Founder and owner of Angel Consulting s.a.s. - The company's activities focus on EU legislation, cosmetics Safety Assessment reports, claim sustainability and cosmetics good manufacturing practices (GMP ISO 22716:2007).

Graduated in Industrial Chemistry at University of Bologna, he started his carreer has Development lab Manager in Rohm and Haas – Italy and worked for his first years in the field of development of new cosmetic ingredients (he published several international patents), both natural and synthetic. Then he worked in touch with cosmetic manufacturers in field of Regulatory and Development (both new ingredients and cosmetic products), where he found his “natural environment”.

He participated in many Association activities, as the European Federation for Cosmetic Ingredients (EFfCI), RTC-Unipro (Association that involves manufacturers and Universities), and the new born Polo Tecnologico della Cosmesi - Italy (manufacturers association).

His current activity is shared between Executive Operations on consultancy with Angel Consulting (in which he coordinates several experts in many fields of cosmetology), Teaching at a University training course organized by  Manufacturer Associations and Development projects that he coordinates between Cosmetic Manufacturers and Research Centers.



Jeffrey W. Card, Ph.D.

Jeffrey joined Intertek in March 2007.  He holds a Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Toxicology and received postdoctoral training at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in Research Triangle Park, NC.  Jeffrey oversees the design and management of nonclinical drug development programs and prepares submission packages for review by regulatory agencies.

He also manages the conduct of toxicological risk assessments for impurities and contaminants in pharmaceuticals and consumer products and helps coordinate the preparation of safety dossiers for cosmetics and their ingredients.  Jeffrey has authored more than 25 peer-reviewed articles in the fields of toxicology, physiology, carcinogenesis, and nanotechnology.



Tom Jonaitis

Tom Jonaitis graduated from the University of Toronto with an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Toxicology.  After working on his senior project at the Center for Addiction and Mental Health assisting in a research study evaluating the stressing effects of alcohol consumption on subjects, and a short internship with Ontario Ministry of Labor (Occupational Health and Safety), Tom has worked with Intertek Cantox for the last 7 years.  Starting out in the Chemicals group working in hazard communication and classification, Tom joined the Food group where he has used his scientific research skill and provided regulatory support on a range of projects including pesticides, nanomaterials, food and feed additives, as well as conducting exposure and risk assessments."



Ramzia Lefebvre,

Ramzia presently serves as a Technical Manager for Russia and Customs Union products certification at Intertek in France. She leads personal care products certification access for  Russian and Customs Union’s (including Kazakhstan and Belarus) requirements and works in cooperation with local authorities and cosmetics federations. Ramzia has been in the field of export regulation for over 15 years, with extensive experience in Russian regulation for personal care products. As an expert in this field, she has worked with numerous cosmetics manufacturers or exporters and has accompanied them to assure compliance with Russian national standards. 

Ramzia is a graduate of the Higher Education Institute of Gorki (Russian Federation) and of the Sorbonne University of Paris (France). She is author of articles on new cosmetic regulation in Russia in Inside Cosmeceuticals (USA) and Premium Beauty (France) web magazines and has been an invited guest speaker at Cosmetic Federations in France, Italy and Spain.

Aurelie joined Intertek in 2004 and became an expert in conformity assessment, especially for Middle East and Africa cosmetic regulations. She is a regulatory and technical support within Intertek and is currently responsible for developing and maintaining Registration and Certification procedures for cosmetic and perfumery products under the certification programs hold by Intertek (Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Tanzania…). Among her functions, she is also contributor to seminars relative to EMEA (spell out what this is)regulations.
She has followed training at ISIPCA (International Perfume, Cosmetics and Food Flavouring Institute) in Paris (France) and holds a Master’s specializing in Safety and International Regulations for Perfumes and Cosmetic Products

Ronni Weinkauf, VP of NeoStrata’s Global Research and Development team, began her career with Unilever R&D in 1993 as a Research Scientist in the Clinical Research and Appraisal department.  Through her nearly 15 year tenure with Unilever, Ronni not only lead the Clinical Research team and the Skin Cleansing and Care clinical program, but also held senior Program management roles within the Skin Cleansing and Skin Care Research Program.  Ronni was Global Anti-Aging Program Director, leading all anti-aging and anti-irritant research efforts in the US, Europe and Asia.  

Ronni’s program delivered numerous patent protected new technologies, products, claims, driving growth for the Pond’s, Dove, as well Elizabeth Arden brands.  In 2007, Ronni joined the NeoStrata Company as VP of Research & Development and an executive member of NeoStrata’s leadership team.  The NeoStrata company, is a dermatology based skin research & development company.  The founders of NeoStrata pioneered and patented the use of Alpha Hydroxy Acids for the treatment and reversal of Aging Skin.  The NeoStrata company continues to identify and develop new generation anti-aging technology for both the NeoStrata branded products as well as partnership within the industry.  As VP of Global Research & Development, Ronni leads new technology development and product development programs which support the company’s NeoStrata dermatologist dispensed, and Exuviance and CoverBlend retail brands sold around the world in over 80 countries.

Stacy Hawkins, Unilever Global Clinical Leader, Skin R&D Program began her career with Unilever R&D in 1996 as a research scientist and group leader of the Clinical Instruments Group in the Clinical Research and Skin Appraisal department.  As Global Clinical leader she develops and delivers global clinical testing plans for the Skin R&D program.  Her current responsibilities include development and execution of Unilever’s global publication strategy for skin research journals, key dermatology and industry conferences, and medical and educational materials.  She is also responsible for linking key research external collaborations to Unilever brand and educational activities.

Her research expertise includes: understanding wrinkle morphology and repair with anti-aging therapies; quantifying elasticity of the skin; clinical and consumer measurement of skin color and texture; role of skin barrier in maintenance of skin health.  Her research has been published in various skin bioengineering and dermatological publications, and has been used for novel claims substantiation for Pond’s and Dove skin care products.  These publications led to articles featured in Skin & Aging and Dermatology Times, as well as several invited talks and book chapters.  In addition, she serves on the Executive Committee of the International Society for Biophysics and Imaging of the Skin.  She received her Bachelors of Science degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in BioElectrical Engineering, and her Ph.D. from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, in Biomedical Engineering.

Uma Santhanam joined Avon in 2004 and is a Senior Manager in Avon’s Cell Biology and In Vitro Toxicology group.  In this role, she manages new technology identification, in vitro safety and efficacy testing of ingredients and formulations, and helps create and substantiate novel claims for Avon skin care products. Using her extensive skin biology background and cutting-edge scientific approaches, Dr. Santhanam has helped develop several breakthrough anti-aging skin care products.    Prior to joining Avon, she worked as a Project Leader/Lead Research Scientist in Unilever Research US in New Jersey.  Her research interests include skin aging, photodamage and its repair, skin pigmentation, and inflammation.   

Dr. Santhanam holds a B.S.in Microbiology and Ph.D in Biochemistry from University of Bombay, India.  She completed her post-doctoral training at The Rockefeller University in New York.  Dr. Santhanam holds a total of fourteen U.S. patents and over twenty international patents in the field of skincare.   She also has several US and International patents pending.  Dr. Santhanam has over twenty scientific publications, over thirty poster presentations and has authored a chapter in the book Biotechnology in Personal Care, Cosmetic Science and Technology Series, Taylor and Francis, New York, NY, 2004.   Dr. Santhanam was recognized for her work at Avon with several awards including The Avon Chairman’s Award  (2010), Excellence In Execution Award (2010) ,  Matrix Award (2010) and Global R&D Achievement Award (2006, 2007).

Peter Konish is the Director of Sensory and Formulation Development at NeoStrata Company, Inc.  Peter is responsible for the development of novel skin care formulations incorporating the use of alpha hydroxy acids (ie glycolic & lactic acids), polyhydroxy acids (ie gluconolactone), bionic acids (ie lactobionic & maltobionic acids), and aminosugars for the NeoStrata®, Exuviance®, and CoverBlend® skin care brands. Prior to this, Peter was at L’Oreal where he held the position of Manager of Fine Fragrance Ancillary Development. 

In this role, Peter was responsible for overseeing the development of skin care and body care formulations to support the Ralph Lauren, Kiehls, and LancĂ´me brands. Peter also has a strong background in polymer chemistry and started out his career at Amerchol Corporation where he researched the synthesis and application of various natural polymers derivatives using Chitin, Chitosan, Starch, Guar, and Cellulose for the skin care and hair care industries. Peter has co-authored numerous scientific articles in the Journal of Cosmetic Science, Macromolecules and in the ACS series of Polysaccharide Applications, Volume 737. He has been in the personal care industry for over 18 years and has extensive experience in skin care product development. Peter holds a B.S in Chemistry from Monmouth University, a M.S in Cosmetic Science from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and is an active member of the New York Chapter of the SCC.
